Red X Frequent Questions
To become a Red X Apprentice, you must complete your project within one year of the date you went to class. However, on average, most projects are completed well within that time, between four and eight months.
We encourage small groups to attend the training together, typically in groups of six individuals working on three projects. We have found this is the best way to organize a training program, because teams can communicate with each other and their coach and not only learn together but solve real problems quickly with the support of their organization.
It includes

  • eLearning module as a class preparation,
  • the class itself,
  • coaching to support the understanding of the methodology,
  • certification based on project review and
  • access to the Shainin Portal
  • Red X Tracker Web Application and online reference materials
Shainin can assist you in choosing your project. To select a good project, we look for problems:

  • with a hidden root cause
  • that are actively happening
  • with examples of good and bad parts readily available
  • that are important to your company to solve
A certified Red X Master or Shainin Coach, in conjunction with a project sponsor, will guide you as you complete your project to solve a real problem at your company.
Red X is a way of approaching complex problems, based on the belief that for any technical system experiencing variation in one of its outputs, the sources of that variation follow a Pareto distribution, so there is always one source that contributes more to the overall variation than others, and that is the Red X.
While Red X is well suited for any technical problem, we recommend avoiding warranty problems for Apprentices. The added layer of complexity with warranty or field return problems creates more challenges for beginners. Working on a manufacturing problem will set the candidates up for success.
